Privacy Policy

Desknook is designed with your privacy as a priority. The App:

• Does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information to external servers
• Does not use analytics, telemetry, or tracking services
• Does not use advertising identifiers (IDFA) or similar technologies
• Does not share any data with third parties
• Does not require account creation or user registration

The Website analytics described in Part B are never part of the App. Visiting our Website has no effect on what the App does, and using the App has no effect on what the Website sees.

All data created and used by the App is stored exclusively on your device using macOS local storage mechanisms (UserDefaults and App Group containers). This includes:

• Your dashboard layout and app arrangement preferences
• Custom websites you add to the dashboard
• Favorited and pinned applications
• Keyboard shortcut assignments
• Language preferences
• Cached website icons (favicons)
• Widget configurations
• Browser preference settings

This data never leaves your device and is not accessible to us or any third party.

The App makes limited network requests solely to provide its core functionality:

• Web browsing: When you open a website through the App, standard web requests are made to load the requested page. These requests are handled by Apple’s WKWebView framework and are equivalent to browsing in Safari.
• Icon loading: The App downloads website icons (favicons) directly from the websites you add to your dashboard, to display them in the App interface.

No user data, device information, or usage statistics are transmitted to us during these requests.

The App provides access to Google Workspace services (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, etc.) and other websites through an embedded web browser. When you use these services through the App, you are subject to the respective privacy policies of those services (e.g., Google’s Privacy Policy). We do not intercept, modify, or store any data you exchange with these services beyond what is cached locally by the web browser component.

The App’s embedded web browser (WKWebView) may store cookies and web data locally on your device as part of normal web browsing functionality. This data is managed by Apple’s WebKit framework and remains on your device. You can clear this data by removing the App.

We use Google Analytics 4, a service provided by Google LLC (and, for visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, Google Ireland Limited), to understand how the Website is used and to measure whether our Google Ads campaigns work.

Only with your consent. When you first visit, a banner asks whether you accept analytics. Until you click “Accept,” no Google script loads and no information is sent to Google. If you click “Decline,” or make no choice, that stays true for your whole visit and any later ones.

What is collected if you accept

• Pages you view and how long you stay
• How you arrived: the referring website, search engine, or ad campaign, including the Google Ads click identifier when you arrive from one of our ads
• Clicks on download buttons, including which button you used
• General device and browser information: device type, operating system, browser, screen size, and language
• Approximate location (country, region, city), derived by Google from your IP address. According to Google, Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses.

We do not collect your name, email address, or any other information that identifies you directly through analytics, and we do not combine analytics data with any other data we hold.

Why we use it

To see which pages are useful, to improve the Website, and to measure whether people who click our Google Ads go on to download Desknook. Your consent also allows Google to use this information for advertising purposes, which may include showing you Desknook ads on other websites.

Google’s role

Google processes this information under its own terms and policies. You can read how Google uses information from websites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and Google’s Privacy Policy at policies.google.com/privacy.

Retention

Analytics data is kept in Google Analytics for 14 months and then deleted automatically.

International transfers

We are based in the United States, and Google may process analytics information in the United States and other countries. Google LLC participates in the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.

The Website sets no cookies of its own. If you accept analytics, Google sets the following cookies on desknook.app:

To remember your choice, the Website stores a small consent record in your browser’s local storage. It contains only your choice (accept or decline) and when you made it. It is never sent to us or anyone else.

Changing your mind

Use the “Cookie settings” link in the Website footer at any time. If you withdraw consent, analytics stops immediately and the Google cookies listed above are removed from our domain. You can also clear cookies and local storage in your browser settings.

Newsletter. If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address and the page where you signed up. Our email provider, EmailOctopus, stores and processes this on our behalf. We use it only to send you Desknook news and updates. Every email includes an unsubscribe link; when you unsubscribe, you stop receiving emails, and you can ask us to delete your address entirely.

Support. If you email us, we use your email address and message only to respond to you.

Our hosting provider may automatically record technical information, such as IP address, browser type, and the time of a request, in server logs. These logs are used only to deliver the Website and keep it secure, and are not used by us for analytics or advertising.

Where data protection laws such as the GDPR apply, we rely on the following legal bases:

• Website analytics, ad measurement, and the newsletter: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time
• Responding to your emails: our legitimate interest in answering your questions, or steps you have asked us to take
• Server logs: our legitimate interest in operating a secure Website

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete personal information we hold about you, to restrict or object to its processing, to receive it in a portable format, and to withdraw consent at any time. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing that took place before you withdrew it. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Analytics information is pseudonymous and held by Google, so we generally cannot link it to you by name. The simplest way to stop it is to withdraw consent through “Cookie settings.” For anything else, contact us using the details below.

The App does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children. The Website is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

App data is stored locally on your device and is protected by your device’s built-in security features, including macOS file system encryption (FileVault) and your user account password. We recommend keeping your operating system up to date to benefit from the latest security protections.

Website analytics and newsletter data are held by Google and EmailOctopus under their security measures. We limit access to these accounts to the people who need it.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the “Effective Date” at the top of this document. If we change how the Website uses analytics, we will ask for your consent again.
